Belle's Story

Belle Update (July 6, 2001)

My life has changed in the last week. My puppies and I had the daylight basement all to our selves. There was one person who came to feed me and take me out. I took care of all nine of my puppies. Now my family has moved upstairs to a place called the kitchen. Our life has a schedule now as the puppies are going outside as soon as they wake up and are encourage to go to the bathroom there and work off a little of their energy. I really appreciate that, as I was their play toy. My puppies are growing so fast that they are being fed milk, cereal and puppy food in addition to what I feed them. I think that is a fine idea because they have developed teeth and it really hurts when they are still hunting and my milk is gone. I think that soon I will be leaving my pups because I have done all I can for them. . It was all strange being moved around, having nine puppies and finding I knew how to care for them.
I really want to get ready to go to my new home. A nice family has already spoken for me. After I make sure this is my only accidental litter, I can go. I am not much more than a puppy so I need to start living my own life.
Here's Belle's story:
I was trained out west to do some racing on the East Coast. I reached the age of 16 months and was planning to travel to my first track to have my maiden races. Well I was shipped in a big trailer with 99 other Greyhounds and my roommate wasn't a sister "if you know what I mean."

Getting to the track with many other new Grey's I was the first one to chase the bunny and show my stuff. The trainer said I could fly. He put me aside and worked through the long list of other new arrivals and eventually got back to me.

Some time had past and I, along with the trainer, had noticed that I was getting a little heavy. I went out for extra exercise but it didn't help - I actually continued to gain weight. Though I couldn't quite figure it out, I knew something wasn't right.

Next thing I knew I was being loaded up with a half of dozen other Grey's into a Blue van and was headed to Maine. I had heard the older Greyhounds talking about a different kind of kennel in Maine where you get special care, baths, teeth cleaned, neutered, (what ever that means) vaccines, walks with new people on trails in the woods, and then get adopted into a people family!

Greyhounds were the only family I knew, but the older Greyhounds seemed to get excited about this prospect. A couple hours later we stopped and went into a white building. Was this my new home? Wait a minute, I was the only one going in. This seemed strange - was I going to get a neuter thing? The driver of the van brought me out back and some nice people picked me up onto a very hard table and patted me while they took a picture. I had heard of pictures back at the track, but it was when we were going to race and cross the finish line. Finish Line!

Wait a minute I haven't reached the finish line! I haven't even raced!

A nice little human gave me a pat on the head and said I'll be right back with the X-ray. Hmmm They talk so funny here. A few minutes later a picture of me was put up on a light board and two bigger humans and the little human were counting out puppies. Puppies!!!! That is what I am! They said I had several puppies inside and they would arrive in two to three weeks! YIKES !!!!

Back in the van, I was trying to get a grip on what was going on with me - things were moving so fast. We arrived at this kennel in Maine and one by one the Buds I rode up with were led into the kennel. Hey what about me! I was the last to come out of the truck, and didn't go with everyone else. I was led into a HOUSE! Hmmm, I was a little worried! I had heard houses could be a good thing, but I was sad to see all my Greyhound friends go in another direction.

We got to the door and to my surprise GUESS WHAT? MORE GREYHOUNDS!!! I was introduced to everyone in the boarding room. That's a hotel were Greyhounds hang out when their humans are on vacation. The boarders told stories about their humans and new and fun things that they do in houses. They all said that if they couldn't be with their humans this place was a Greyt second option.

Then I went into the main house. There were more Greyhounds in here, but they were called "house puppies." They all had there own beds on the floor, thick cushy and soft, but one old guy had his own couch. He is 14 years old and comes from Ireland I was told. His name is Hector, but most the humans call him Hectosoras cause he is so old.

Then I met this big handsome Black Brindle guy. He was a little scary at first. He was the Alpha dog and came up to me with his head held high and his long tail up in the air. I think he liked me though 'cause after the introduction his tail went down, he grinned at his human and walked of kind of goofy like.

I had the biggest hugest crate in the house, next to a window, TV, and the big male Tony had his bed right outside my crate and he keep an eye out for me. I think he was protecting me.

I have learned allot about houses and humans and puppies also. I'm getting a little tired, so I'm going to have to stop here and update you later. Tony's dad said I'm going out on the Internet so all my friends can keep updated on my progress. Until then Bye.

Hi ! This is Belle. I'm back and wow have things changed ! That Tony greyhound I was telling you about, he is the Alpha greyhound in the house and we have become best of friends. He has stayed real close to me from the very beginning when I first arrived here in Maine. He makes sure no one else bothers me.

You know those pictures I was telling you about last time? Well it turns out that those humans in the white building were correct. I had puppies hiding inside me all right! Last night around 8:00 I started to feel my belly move. It wasn't like when I accidentally ate my food and Tony's. It felt a lot worse! The driver of the van I found out is named Scott. He has been checking on me several times a day. At first I thought he was calling me babies yet. But then I found out he was just checking on me to see if I found my " babies yet "

Well at around 8:00 PM I started having things called something like "contraptions" Anyway these contraptions kept coming and it wasn't long before I was able to find my first puppy. After I found my first baby the contraptions started again until I found my second. At around 2:00 am Scott said it looked like that #10 was going to be my last baby to be found.

After 10 he looked really tired and as you can see I'm a little sleepy myself. Before I go to sleep though I have a favor to ask you out there. I need help naming my babies! I think there all boys, but I'll let you know in my next note. Just send suggestions to grayhoun@megalink.net and Scott will make sure I receive them.

Ps I want to thank Erin for coming over to help me while I was finding my babies and for doing foster care with my track friend Tripod.
Talk to you later

Hi Everyone,

This is Belle again. I'm sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. My babies have kept me so busy the last couple of weeks, and me being a new young mother; it's been a little difficult.

I'm in Yarmouth Maine and I have one whole floor to my kids and myself. My new friend Mary, calls my suite daylight Basement. I don't know what that means, but I do know I can look out though the walls and see huge dogs that would weigh in at the track at 2,000 pounds or more. (Mary calls them Belgium's ???) and you know my friend Tripawd? She's my Greyhound friend I met at the Bridgton kennel with three legs. Well here in Yarmouth there are two legged dogs with real long necks and tiny heads, and without ears. Things are different here, but I'm having a good time with Mary and my babies.

And Tripawd, the Lake Region Animal Hospital in Windham fixed her all up and some nice folks from way up in Presque Isle drove down to adopt here. This is their picture!!!!

I have included a recent picture of my babies. There eyes are open and they are really moving around now. Scott says they kind of look like Blue Fawns with Black faces. My belly was getting really sore so Scott clipped my baby's nails the last time he stopped in to visit. Don't tell anyone, but I heard them talking about bringing my babies and me over to the reunion June 16 & 17th. I've got to feed my babies now, but I'll see you later.

Love Ya
Belle

PS Thanks for all your emails and baby name suggestions.

Hey everybody this is my friend Erin and my other friend "Tripawd" Scott said she only has three legs, but still has a Greyt understanding and loves to jog! She now has a new home in Presque Isle with a wonderful family.
